Another one is here...

Lex and I roomed next door to Kate a couple of years ago at an RT convention, and she was so much fun. She'd hound us about being so loud that she couldn't sleep, but she was always smiling when she gave us hell. She'd take photos for us (Ann Wesley Hardin was in one of them - this was back after Playgirl Magazine had featured "Just Desserts" - my first novel with Ellora's Cave - in one of their issues). Anyway...one day Kate dropped by on her way downstairs. She said she just needed to take a few moments to pull herself together before she had to "go downstairs and break someone's heart". She was that kind of an editor. Very thoughtful, very human. She loved writers and wanted them to succeed, so when she had to turn them down, it saddened her.

God Bless, Kate. Thanks for all the wonderful memories and for fostering so many authors' careers. The industry won't be the same without you, lady.

Fresh Smells
Before this monster cold or flu bug set in with me about three weeks ago, daughter-in-law, good soldier that she is, tried to disinfect the house so that she wouldn’t come down with this crap. She didn’t have time to vacuum or dust, mind you, but she went to the store and snagged every imaginable Glade Plug-In and can of Lysol that she could. It was getting so that I couldn’t pass from the living room to the kitchen without hearing “ssht…ssht” and smelling white tea and linen fragrance. Bathroom? I’m not sure what was in there…lilacs, I think. Their bedroom, you name it. Everywhere. Hell, I’d simply go to brush my teeth…”ssht…ssht”.

I have one dog who can single-handedly (single-paw-ed-ly?) peel the paint from the walls of an entire 12’X14’ room with just one fart. The first two days the kids left on their vacation last week, I fed both dogs Mexican and prayed for whatever odors ensued.
*
Finally, I’m able to breathe better, and all of those plug-ins are set aside, waiting upon the kids to return. I’m not plugging ‘em back in. I’d rather smell the dog passing gas than battle the annoying sound and smell of freshness assaulting my senses. If I want a great smell, I’ll bake an apple pie or throw open the windows and take my chances with autumn pollen and such.

Tomorrow Gretchen is giving the program at the writers’ meeting. Maybe I’ll sit next to someone wearing Jungle Gardenia, and then I’ll really go off on a tangent.

Hugs, everybody.

Still Here
I'm just not up to par. For those who have been emailing, IM'ing, etc...still sick but doing better. For those who watch the blog (ha - what blog? - I'm rarely here), SORRY...I really have had good intentions.*
Just found out a favorite cousin passed away. She was the poker-playin'-est, hair-dressing-est, most loveable, laugh-with-able, engaging person you could meet. Cost five bucks an ante just to join in the family poker games, and she was one of the reaons - she was good. Her mama taught me bathroom etiquette when I was a little bitty girl, and Emma Ruth taught me people etiquette years later.
*
God bless, Emma Ruth. Know you were loved.
*
My kids are still gone on vacation, so I'm here by myself, and all I've done for a solid week is sleep, tend to the dogs, watch courtroom dramas or true crime, and eat soup. I've had Tuscan chicken, chicken & noodle, bean with bacon, minestrone, you name it - I'm about 'souped out', but it's all helped.
*
The weather is cool, the cold or flu bug seems ready to bid me adieu (please, Lord, let it be soon - lol), and I have caught up on edits and art sheets and all that good stuff on all but one book...just have edits to do on that one. Am brainstorming on a romantic suspense and hope to be at least a third into it before the kids return this coming weekend.
*
Then we'll have a few days together before the quarterly doctor's visits and an upcoming trip to the lake with friends. I missed the last one with 'the girls', so am looking forward to this one. Yeah, it'll be a little cool, and we can't swim, but... *grin* A bit of booze, lots of laughter, maybe some card games, walks around the lake, and critiquing, but if I can shake this respiratory thang that has me down, I'm-a-goin'.
*
Hugs, everyone. Stay well.

the only pic I refuse to post is the one where he's giving Patrick Swayze the spiel and says MJ did it better.
I thought that one was tacky beyond words.

Saving Noah
Dexter Krispin arrived in the small Kansas town of Schicksal with one thing on his mind: finishing his doctorial thesis. He hoped getting away from his hectic life in Pittsburgh would allow him to concentrate on the long overdue paper and to forget about his last lover. Life-long Schicksal resident, Noah Stoffel, has managed to keep his sexuality a secret. Yet, after one look at the dark-haired newcomer, he knows his life in the sleepy town will never be the same. But more than Noah's desire for privacy stands between him and Dexter. For years, the residents of Schicksal have been hiding a horrific secret, one that takes Dexter mere days to uncover and expose...a secret that could destroy-or heal-them all.Read Excerpt

Friends With Flowers
Camped out at Casa Carol's this weekend with her stud muffin maltapoo. Last weekend when I house-sat and pup-sat, I did 7000 words in a weekend and finished all but the last chapter of a m/m novella for Loose Id. This weekend I completed the manuscript I hadn't worked on at home and did little else other than play with Dudley and admire the flowers. Well, I shared emails with other writers while I was here. All in all, it was a good, relaxing weekend, despite how it started, with a sick pooch.
The friends all shared a common ailment--writers' block or even simply lack of motivation. Maybe it's the weather. Maybe it's something more serious. But I told one of them that I feel sometimes we become more involved in our lives than our writing, which can't be such a bad thing. We pay more attention to our health or that of a loved one, we reflect upon what we've done and what we haven't, and we do a bit of self-analyzing and re-directing, determine what's to be done next or what road to take when there's a fork.
Hope this finds the rest of you in good spirits and good health if you're contemplating such things. For me, it's been good to kick back and simply BE, to enjoy myself, to give thanks for what and whom I have in my life, and to look forward to things I have yet to do.
Hugs,
Sunny Lyn
